On the recent trip I made to Norway to co-guide an AMAZING workshop with Arild Heitmann, this was easily the most productive night of shooting we had. Arild has an almost sixth sense for aurora displays, as he's spent his entire life living underneath them.
We made sure to have our tour attendees in this spot that we helped them scout for compositions earlier in the day, and when the Aurora displays started it was funny to see everyone disperse in their own directions to the spots they had found.
This is a blend of about 8 different focus points at f8 for depth of field in the land areas, then a shot for the sky at f2.8. Focus stacking your frames at night is a time consuming process in the field, but is worth it if you have the time.
Arild Heitmann, Stian Klo and I are super stoked to announce two more of these tours, so if you are interested in having a freaking blast in the arctic you'll want to check it out.
Also, I recently released a new post-processing instructional video. It's packed with some unique techniques and theories about processing you may not find anywhere else. People seem to really be enjoying the videos and have had nothing but great things to say, so I *think* they are helping people... it's been awesome to see the many before/after shots people have been emailing me. Be sure to check the videos out if you are into that sort of thing. It's all on my website, as well as more photos, photo tour info, processing instruction via Skype like everyone else is doing, etc, etc.
