La iglesia proyectada por Pere de Coma es de planta basilical de cruz latina con tres naves y un acusado transepto al cual se abren cinco ábsides. En la intersección de los brazos de la cruz, se alza la cúpula, de planta octogonal sobre trompas. Su originalidad reside en el doble cuerpo mural que lo circunda por completo. Regular y simétrico, el edificio que Pere de Coma proyectó impone solemnidad. La perfecta interdependencia entre los pilares cruciformes románicos y las bóvedas de crucería góticas dio como resultado un espacio monumental, amplio y lleno de plasticidad. Las dieciséis columnas que rodean los potentes pilares de soporte evidencian el tránsito al gótico y al mismo tiempo muestran una clara voluntad de embellecimiento escultórico que encontraría continuidad en ventanas y portaladas. La fachada principal románica comunica con el claustro y consta de tres puertas. Las laterales son más sencillas, siendo la central la que recibe todo el protagonismo. La puerta de la nave central, o Portal Mayor, define el modelo de portalada de la llamada Escuela de Lleida, sin tímpano y con arquivoltas en degradación profusamente decoradas.
