People often ask us how close we get to the polar bears on our Polar Bears of Svalbard tour. Well, pretty close.
This is clearly not the ideal perspective, but as our captain slowly maneuvered our ship through the ice, a polar bear was walking towards ship to check us out.
As it walked towards us, we were able to take many long lens shots, and medium telephoto shots, then medium wide angle shots, and then wide angle and iPhone shots when it got too close.
When a polar gets this close, you stay inside the ship, mainly for mortality reasons.
The bear walked around the ship a couple of times, even tried to get in, and then decided to have a nap at a very photo friendly distance.
The great thing about polar bears is that they are indeed very inquisitive and will very often come to check you out. I guess there is not much else to do on the vast ice fields of the Arctic apart from hunting seals, so a ship is a nice distraction.

If you would like to explore the landscape and wildlife of Svalbard, and photograph the magnificent polar bear, then this is surely one of the best trips out there. We’ll be sailing on a small ship with an ice-strengthened hull, so we can actually move deep into the sea ice, something that most larger ships can’t. And as we have chartered the ship for just our group, our itinerary is extremely flexible.
This amazing tour will be led by world famous Wildlife Photographer of the Year winner Greg du Toit, who is not only a great guy with a very creative eye, but also one of the best wildlife photographers on the planet.
