Rebirth
Alister Benn - Gairloch, Scotland

Photography has brought me closer to people across the globe than we could have ever dreamed of. I was thinking today of my great friend Adam Gibbs, a brilliant photographer living in Vancouver and working across that great country. I follow his images, and he posted one today from Peyto Lake, but unlike the usual glacial blue happy images, his was quite gloomy and I commented on it. It seemed today he shared my slight feeling of melancholy, but we both feel the need to express optimism in our images. This little tree sprang to my mind - an image I haven't worked before and it's been sat on my hard drive for nearly 2 years. Well today felt like the right day. In a world of news headlines that make us shudder and sometimes despair, it is nice to think that there is a purpose and life will follow tragedy. This little tree grows in the remains of a once mighty pine - the clouds outside my office are breaking now and we will have a fine evening after the rain. Maybe time to turn off the computer for now, switch off the outside world and go for a gentle stroll up the glen in the bracing wind. Recharge, repeat.
