The River Speaks
Peter James Nature Photography - United States

I have gone to this spot many times over the years. Often times I will try to take a photo or two, but I have even just drove out and sat on the rocks watching the slow current of the salt river under some of the most beautiful peaks. There is just something about this location that pulls me in every time. Last evening, I decided I needed to get out and get some fresh air. I promised myself that I wouldn't end up at this spot and I would try to find something different, which I tried to do unsuccessfully. Obviously, I broke my own promise, but with so little time before sunset, I knew this was the closest spot to set up and take a photo. I hesitated making my way down to the river. I walked along the river bank searching for any decent composition utilizing the river rocks. Again, I was unsuccessful in my attempt, and I wandered back towards my vehicle. Just about to give up, I forced myself to go to one of my favorite spots along the river. I scrambled down to this overlook that looks both up and down river. This had to be the spot. Frustrated and annoyed that I ended up in a spot I have photographed many times, I looked across the river and remembered why I visit this place so much. The peaks were getting painted with some of the most intense golden light I have ever seen here. Down below, the sound of fish jumping out of the water and the occasional waterfowl flying by. Despite it's close proximity to the road, it felt untamed. Everything seemed to begin to come together as the moon emerged from behind the clouds. I finally decided to set up my shot and was rewarded with one of the most colorful scenes I have witnessed here. The contrast of cool and warm tones were about as good as I have seen in the desert, not to mention there was a river below slightly reflecting the beautiful sky and peaks. This might be my favorite image I have ever taken of this place, and surely a moment I will not forget for some time. It was one of those moments that you just know is special.
